Brilliant logo and identity package by Richard Arthur Stewart of Commoner Inc. The eagle/comb mashup is witty and powerful, and makes me wish I had thought of it.

I’m noticing a resurgence old-fashioned barbershops (as opposed to salons). Here in Toronto, we’ve got the Crow’s Nest, which coincidentally uses some very similar imagery in their branding.

But Fast Eddie’s isn’t just jumping on the bandwagon; they’ve been operating out of Alliston since the fities. It just so happens that they also appreciate good design.

Alan Sailer has a pretty sweet gig: not only does he make cool and compelling images as an artist, but he does so by blowing things up.

By using the sound of the explosion to trigger a flash, Sailer manages to freeze his subjects mid-explosion on cheery, colourful backgrounds.

This poster is arcade fan-service in its finest. We’ve got all the major players here in a head to head, no-holds-barred battle for 8-bit supremacy. What I find particularly amusing is how the Joust sprites are just way worse than everything else. What gives, Williams Electronics?

The guys at DKNG, the studio behind this print, have some really exceptional posters under their belt. There’s even an amazing “making-of” video to accompany their Explosions in the Sky print.

Proximity

I’ve shown off some of Michael Freimuth’s work here before, but I recently rediscovered some design work he did for the Chicago art-journal Proximity while delving into the annals of a tumblr account from yesteryear. The logo itself is really sharp; it’s simple, geometric, and bold, which is a holy trinity as far as I’m concerned. Not to mention it’s vaguely reminiscent of the NFPA hazmat warning stickers that you see in science labs, which gives it extra geek appeal in my books.

The inside’s just as nice. But it’s these buttons that really do it for me. “Fuck Smart, Let’s Art.” Now that’s sentiment I can get behind.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s been ages since you’ve gotten a post out of us. We’re sorry; sometimes life gets in the way of living. Or blogging. Or whatever. Maybe we’re just lazy. But none of that matters. What matters is, I’m back and I’ve brought a peace offering to show just how much I care.

That offering, my friends, is a freakin’ geodesic dome made out of fluorescent lights. B. Fuller is probably looking down on this and saying, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Michal Maciej Bartosik made this and some other pretty awesome light installations, but there’s more. After this, Bartosik went right to work outfitting another dome with tesla coils. That’s right: TESLA COILS.

And that is what we call critical success.
