Glass Shop

Glass Shop is bringing local coffee back to Brooklyn. While I’m sure their espresso is top notch, I’m mostly interested in the branding and promotional material by designer Michael Freimuth. Freimuth’s work is elegant and consistent, covering the obvious, like signage and take away cups, but also things that typically only employees would interact with, like mixing glasses and the point-of-sale screen. It’s this kind of commitment to detail, by both the designer and Glass Shop, that really impresses me.

Wine Chill Drops

You know what’s smart? Thermodynamics. What’s even smarter? Using it to your advantage. This device chills your wine in 90 seconds (or what’s claimed). I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, you get a piece of metal cold enough, with enough volume and surface area and it’s sure gonna cool your wine down fast, I’d be worried that ice could form on the device itself and there’s no telling what that’ll do to you wine.

Never-the-less great idea when you just can’t wait for that bottle to chill.

Make Your Own Soda

Howcast has an interesting project that can not only save you money, but would also be an interesting project to do with any science oriented kid in your life. It seems you should be able to get most of the supplies at your local grocer, but the soda flavoring would need to come from a local you-brew. Check out the humorous video (above) for the full instructions on how to make and a full ingredients list.

It’s hard to say no when you’ve got Humphrey Bogart and Dwight Eisenhower endorsing your product. It’s especially hard when that product is delicious sausage and beer. Calling themselves “Purveyors of Artisan Sausage”, the crew at Frank definitely has their niche carved out. And their niche is hungry.

They’ve got everything from the plain hot dog, to chili cheese dogs, to the Jackalope, an antelope and rabbit sausage. Artisan sausage is right. And why not top it off with the of all upsizing options: “Pork It – Split any hot dog, stuff with white American cheese, wrap with bacon and deep fry. Add $1.75″

We’ve seen people doing this kind of thing in the privacy of their own home, but to have a restaurant actively promoting it on their menu is an entirely new phenomenon. We can’t ignore the identity work that the guys at the Decoder Ring Design Concern have done for Frank. It’s both bold, and classic. Not unlike our friend, the hot dog.

Make a Mario Mushroom from a Raddish

Anna the Red as a perfect tutorial on making (Mario) mushrooms from a single raddish. Seems pretty simple and quite effective. Next Step: I’ve got to find a use for these outside a bento box.

Diet Coke

I stumbled upon this old Diet Coke advertisement while getting around on the interwebs and it made me ponder who in their right mind would take an ice cold (Diet) Coke for breakfast instead of the defacto cuppa joe. I, for one, can’t stand aspartame, at any time of day, so I can scarcely imagine giving up my morning coffee for Coke. I know people that would take a DC and a cigarette over most other foods, but for breakfast? What do you think? Sound off in the comments.

Sliced Bread

Now that Adam has opened your appetites up with some delicious eggs, how about a side of toast? Today is the 81st birthday of none-other than the best invention to-date (or so I’m told) pre-sliced bread. First sold as Kleen Maid Sliced Bread by the Chillicothe Baking Company on this day in 1928. The product exists today thanks to Otto Frederick Rohwedder, the inventor of the slicing machine. Two years later, in 1930, Wonder Bread started selling this product nation wide, making your day just that much better.

So how about a real toast to Mr. Rohwedder because without him, I’d never eat bread.

Hard Boiled Eggs

A bit of a departure from our standard fare, but I couldn’t resist. I love eggs of any variety, but poached and boiled top off my list. Imagine my delight when I discovered these bad boys in the prepared food section of my local grocery. Individually packed and peeled, Naturegg has got a surefire health food hit on their hands with these. They’ve got more protein than you can shake a stick at, and they’re only 99 cents! I don’t know about you, but I’d rather mack on some eggs than a Mars bar.
