Papercraft iPhone/iPod Stand

by Dave

img_00541Bringing together both our love for technology and papercraft, Dessine Moi un Object has created this lovely iPod/iPhone stand. For those iPhone/iTouch owners out there it also works as a stand for landscape movie watching, and I also think this would work for a plethora of other smart phones, including android and the Palm Pre.

Take special care in choosing paper for this one; you’re going to want a heavier weight than your average copy paper. The full template is available at the link, so check it out and make your own (bonus points for adding a design to the blank paper first).

Make your mouse do double duty with the Adesso AKP-170, it’s cheap too .

We're Back!

by Dave

After a overly long hiatus, for various reasons, we’ll be (make that a royal we, I can’t make promises for others) back posting on a regular basis. I’ve managed to place myself back in school for at least another year so I’ll have the time to keep you up to date on the things we do.

Remember to add our RSS feed or follow us @convoke to keep up to date.

Laser Bread

by Adam

congress

Do yourself a solid, and view this at a more comprehensive resolution.  Your boy Laser Bread has been banging out the hits from his crib in Minneapolis for some time now.  Aside from his awesome moniker, Laser Bread (aka Brock Davis), has a bunch of winners over on Threadless, but this piece recently caught my eye.  I’ve got a bit of a penchant for turning an artistic lense to technololgy, but is this techno-criticism, praise, or just plain clever?  I’m not sure, and the jury’s still out.  Maybe Pollster could settle this…

James Houston

James HOUSTON, y’all.

He’s a recent design school grad from Scotland, new on the scene, but  I wanted to quickly point at his work with my e-finger.

In particular his wicked performance of Radiohead’s Nude using outmoded electronics. I’m trying to figure out if that’s just a heavily distorted recording of Thom Yorke singing, or an awesome approximation using said equipment. Sounds terrible either way, and I dig it.

Spam One-Liners

by Adam

replicaWe all get them: spam emails with subject lines that look like someone was just randomly circling words in Webster’s.  Most of us will mark it as junk, and delete, only to be barraged again the next day. Well, Linzie Hunter is giving spammers a run for their money.  She’s been hand lettering the subject lines of her inbox, turning cryptic quips about ‘member size’ into art.  The result?  A collection of quirky one-liners on her Behance portfolio.  And a store for prints.  And a publishing deal.  Best of all, she has a nearly limitless supply of inspiration to draw from that should keep her in business for years.

ghostbusterzzz

Now this is art.  Someone has made a desktop collage by stacking pictures of Slimer and the three original Ghostbusters, all backlit by Manhattan’s skyline.  But, it’s even deeper than that.  Look at the names of the tabs above the pics of the ‘Busters.  This means someone probably created HTML files with the names “Egon Spengler” and “Peter Venkman” for titles.

“Uoarrrggh!” Slimer screams, (captioned by the Safari search bar) as he’s sucked towards an open trap.  Special effects courtesy of minimizing in OS X.  To see something even weirder, try going to www.trackybirthday.com, the URL in the GB’s window.

The image itself, on nastynets, links to a playlist by the Discoghosts.  One of the tracks is called Ghostbustersbusters, so I’m going to assume that this image is some sort of promo for their music.  Here’s hoping it pays off, because this type of genius commands recognition.

DAYTUM

by Dave

chart2Sure, I don’t know what you could really gain by plotting the number or different drinks you’ve had in your lifetime, or how sociable you are with your friends, but I do know if you use DAYTUM to graph these things your results will look good enough to frame. The website is focused around setting up an account and graphing “daily data” of the “most important statistics in your life”. They do, however, have some interesting features such as mobile additions, twitter additions, and the ability to download your stats as .cvs to use in your favourite spreadsheet tool. I can see myself plotting data for my next report here just so it will instantly look good. (Office Excel, I hope you’re taking notes)

Nothing Common About It

If you’ve ever wondered where the pictures at the top of CONVOKE come from, you’re about to get let in on a little secret.  The Commons is a project started by flickr in January of last year.  Heritage institutions from all over the world contribute photos to the pool so that users might assist in describing, identifying, and cataloguing the findings.  Best of all, every photo is public domain, so you can cut, copy, paste, and edit to your heart’s content.  There is some truly awesome stuff stashed in there, including what is likely the world’s best collection of beards.
