Dude does some cool stuff.

Still trying to figure out these crazy drawings containing labeled products, done for Apartamento magazine.

I really like the idea of someone really pondering one of these scenes earnestly as they set up their dwelling. Plus the kid’s been on the old school book covers since 07, though apparently his takes on the classics were rejected. Too simple? Maybe so.

Painting the Favelas

Submitted by on May 9, 2009 Art

The ghettos, known as ‘favelas’, of Rio de Janeiro are a rough place to grow up. These are the worst parts of urban Brazil, and often have murder rates higher than those of contemporary war-zones.

Two dutch artists, Jeroen “Haas” Koolhaas and Dre “Hahn” Urhahn set up a project to give the favelas a brighter face in the media. Part of me sees projects like this and thinks “why not give more kids more medical care, or education, not paint and cameras”. Then I think to myself that perhaps that attitude just excludes guys like Haas & Hahn from helping out in places that need it. The kids look as though they’re having a pretty wicked-good time in any event, so though the depressing statistics remain in the back of my mind, I’m all for it.

Stink Digital

I’m not sure I’d really be able to elaborate much on this, can only say it really deserves scopanation by all yall.

Stink Digital is a little media group doing just that, almost anything and everything digital. Film, web design, phone apps, etc etc. Their latest effort as part of a campaign for Philips new 21:9 CINEMA television format is pretty stellar.  Also, visiting the film through the Philips site lets you click little nodes for some colour commentary and play with other neat little features.

hotel door hangers

It’s often the little things that really drive home that fact that one isn’t at home.

Some time ago, bigspaceship founder Michael Lebowitz put up a entry on his blog with a collection of door hangers his grandfather had accumulated during his travels before he passed away. I don’t know why, but these are exactly the sort of trifles that really awaken in me a sense of being in a foreign land.

Roadsworth

Submitted by on April 19, 2009 Art

roadsworth_11fullSomething everyone should scope out, and take minute to see how they feel about it.

Lets say Montreal made graffiti legal tomorrow… what are the odds that every blank piece of pavement or brick or concrete ends up looking like the walls of a bathroom stall.

Leaving it illegal after seeing what Peter Gibson (aka Roadsworth) was doing in the streets seems unsatisfactory as well.

I can’t help but think the only way forward is for artists to make known what they can do, and just maybe stir up a a demand to actually generate some grants and commissions to do this kind of work legitimately. Or rewrite the laws to define graffiti as marks made on public surfaces which are non-rad. But graffiti is a great word. Perhaps we call the sort of stuff Roadsworth puts out graffiti, and rename the bad stuff.

Shittiti.

Which would not include this.

Dreams of Flying

Just some photos of kids doing impossibly sweet things. Goes to show how much you can accomplish by forcing your kids to wear costumes and lie on the ground in bizarre poses with strange props. Yikes that sentence  was an uncomfortable one.

In other news, twitter just keeps blowin up. Is it fully-blown at this stage? Probably.

smallJust to keep you on the Olly Moss tip, here’s a recent bit of his work up on inPRNT.  Available in three sizes, I personally find this little number rather inspiring just on its own. It might just lead you to discover some other things worth scoping out.

Stop worrying about burglars invading your shit.

Instead, hold your shit down hard with this inspired piece of weaponized furniture.

I feel like a bit of a tease since this isn’t, as of yet, something you can just pick up at Ikea. But it should be, and I think even just saying so here brings it closer to being.

Anatomically Correct Sock Monkey

sockmonkey01“In the Swedish language, a verkstad is a workshop or laboratory. While in Sweden, I grew up in the company of my fabulous grandfather and wonderful uncles – inventors, designers, engineers and fabricators – who happened to also build world-class wooden boats.

They created amazing products in their verkstad, a place that doubled as an important center of community life. Neighbors dropped in, the coffee pot was never empty, and the exchange of ideas was always lively.

With this as our model, every place we’ve lived has also doubled as our studio. The rhythm of the everyday is welcomed, as it bastes itself in and out of our creative process.”

This is a heart warming little blurb from verkstad.com

I can only add that my heart was further warmed when, upon further perusing their site, I found Mr. Johnson.
