The Analog Digital Clock

by Dave

clock clock

Humans Since 1982, a group of design students, created this clock. Using 24 analog clocks in a 8×3 arrangement, they can display the time digitally. There’s nothing more to say, scope the vid for the real story.

VHS Illustrations

by Adam

Talk about putting your Moleskine to good use, Hollis Brown Thorton has whipped up some amazing illustrations of VHS cassettes that are sure to take you back a few years.  It’s kind of weird how iconic something as innocuous as a VHS label can be, but looking at these pictures, I can recall specific instances of almost all of these brands from my childhood.  Be sure to pay extra close to the labels.  Carebears and Transformers power hour?  Hells yes.

Nike Trainer 1

by Dave

nike-trainer-1

OK, let’s get one thing straight: I hate running shoes. Not wearing running shoes, mind you, but the look of running shoes. They’re always made to look like you’re super fast or overly technical, but sometimes you need a real shoe. Now these don’t completely win me over, but Nike is on the path of redemption (at least they can get one shoe right).  If only they were compatible with Nike+, I might have actually picked up a pair.

White Rabbits – "Percussion Gun"

by Adam

whiterabbits

Okay, so it’s not quite as high-tech as an installation by UVA, but this set up for the White Rabbits track “Percussion Gun” provides an awesome aesthetic using what appear to be pretty standard lights and fixtures.  Granted, I haven’t actually listened to the track, my work computer doesn’t have speakers, but I will give credit to director Andrew Droz Palermo for creating a visual hook in what would have otherwise been a pretty standard looking performance video.  You can check the video out here.

Edit:  Thanks to reader TriedandTrue for the tip-off to an awesome collection of photos from the video shoot.  You can actually see how simple the setup is; a collection of power bars and 100-watt bulbs with PVC pipe spray-painted black for the frame.

Bakon Vodka

by Dave

bakonThat’s right, the internet’s favorite meat, Bacon, has made a run in with vodka. Gross? Probably. Taking the craze too far? Yes. Drinkable in your next caesar (or bloody mary)? Sure, but why? Maybe I should try some before I make the call; I suppose this could be the finest liquor known to man.  But unless I fall into some, this is not a product I’m going to search for.

Favourites: From the Desk Of

by Dave

gtecc4

As I sat in class earlier today, half paying attention and taking notes, half spinning my pen in my hand, I realized that we haven’t posted about the only pen you’ll find in my or Adam’s hand. I’m going to let you in on a little secret we have over here, the Pilot G-TEC-C4. The main feature of the pen is that it has a 0.4 mm tip (producing a 0.2 mm line), small and sweet, but it also has the perfect weight for doing some of the most brilliant tricks your hands can manage (with a pen that can actually write). Now, I’m not going to claim that Adam or I are known for our penmanship (maybe Ian can chime in on his favorite inking tools) nor our pen trick skills, but I can tell you that you’ll be hard pressed to make me change writing utensils.

2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships

by Dave

beard-comp

That’s right, in case you were unaware, there is a global competition for the ability to grow and style facial hair, and what’s more, it was this past weekend. David Traver (right) took home gold with what I’m told is a “snowshoe style” beard, which took him 2 years to grow. Check out awe inducing images from the event here and here, which I believe rivals Adam’s earlier claim that the commons at flickr has the best collection of beards.

Next competition will be held in Trondheim, Norway in 2011, so stop shaving now.

Beams

by Dave

beamsIf you don’t know, Beams is a nickname we have for Adam over here at CONVOKE. So when I caught wind of his namesake company, I needed to check out their wares. To my surprise, they have more than just a convincing name. Feel free to check out their website, but if you’ve been slacking on your Japanese lessons, you might get a bit lost.  Either way, if you click around enough you’ll find some products that will make you wish you spoke the language.

Rubik's Cube Stamp

by Adam

fontcube

I suppose you’ll have to trust me when I say that despite having differing methods for solving them, Dave and I sort of have a thing for Rubik’s Cubes.  So you can imagine our delight when we discovered that Jas Bhachu had turned the scourge of frustrated cubers everywhere into a painfully tedious and slow method for typesetting.  Awesome.

If it helps, Jas has been kind enough to include instructions on how to make each character.  Or, you know, you could carve your message into solid stone.  With your face.

Polite Clock

by Dave

polite-clock

Have you ever wanted a device that was more polite than your mother would ever expect from you? Well, this thing just showed up at Think Geek. While I agree it is not much to look at, it does have a charm of its own. Imagine waking up to “It appears to be morning. Very inconvenient, I agree. I believe it is the rotation of the Earth that is to blame, Sir.“  This is much preferred to the incessant “errrr” I get every morning.
