Fractal4D is out of this world.  This man, Matt Kenefick, has coded the ultimate program to create rad images with literally no skills. Head on over and download this program (Adobe AIR required) and start creating. The program not only will output wonderful .png images, but it also outputs Illustrator paths for those who want to create more. Best of all, your only required to move your mouse around the screen and click to start and stop paths.

This is the future.

Silhouette Masterpiece Theater

In the 1800s , it was popular (and cheap) to trace and cut silhouette profiles onto paper to record someone’s likeness.  Of course, with the invention of the photograph, the demand for these portraits isn’t exactly what it used to be, but at least Wilhelm Staehele hasn’t forgotten.

Sidenote: I love Back to the Future, but I didn’t really realize how iconic McFly’s stance was until I saw it here.  Well played, Wilhelm.  Well played indeed.

Framed prints available at the Bazaarium.

I’m not sure what it is about LED arrays that I find so appealing, but I’m sure glad there’s a place in the world for a collective that does just thatUVA have updated Dan Flavin’s trademark fluorescent-tube minimalism to the 21st century,  creating interactive lighting installations around the world.  The picture above is from one of their more recent projects at Chuya Museum, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.  But you don’t have to go to a gallery to see UVA in action; they’ve designed custom light installations for Massive Attack, the Chemical Brothers, and U2.

Pictures can only show you much.  You need to check out the video for “Tonto” by Battles to see their work really shine (pun intended).

I feel like a bit of a tease since this isn’t, as of yet, something you can just pick up at Ikea. But it should be, and I think even just saying so here brings it closer to being.

Anatomically Correct Sock Monkey

Submitted by on March 26, 2009 Uncategorized

sockmonkey01“In the Swedish language, a verkstad is a workshop or laboratory. While in Sweden, I grew up in the company of my fabulous grandfather and wonderful uncles – inventors, designers, engineers and fabricators – who happened to also build world-class wooden boats.

They created amazing products in their verkstad, a place that doubled as an important center of community life. Neighbors dropped in, the coffee pot was never empty, and the exchange of ideas was always lively.

With this as our model, every place we’ve lived has also doubled as our studio. The rhythm of the everyday is welcomed, as it bastes itself in and out of our creative process.”

This is a heart warming little blurb from verkstad.com

I can only add that my heart was further warmed when, upon further perusing their site, I found Mr. Johnson.
